Kratie is the capital of Kratie Province. This little charming town is famous for its sunsets on the Mekong River and it is also considered one of the best places on earth to see the critically endangered species of Irrawaddy dolphins. The town has a very attractive riverside scenery and its surrounding areas are indeed worth exploring; lush green villages full of palm, banana and mango trees, some pretty amazing views across the Mekong and lots of smiles.
The regions near Kratie along the Mekong were some of the most populated areas during the pre-Angkorian era. There are several temples, Khmer ancient houses and French colonial architecture. Nowadays the province is still developing; infrastructure and services remain somehow limited to the seasonal nature of the tourism sector in Cambodia. Nevertheless many travellers argue that Kratie is a very pleasant spot to enjoy Cambodia’s rural areas and admire the natural beauty that the mighty Mekong has helped to create.
