Battambang is a province located in northwest Cambodia and it is also the name of its capital. The region has a strong agricultural economy mostly from rice fields and it is believed to have the best farming lands in the Kingdom. It was established as a major trading hub, however nowadays tourism is also slowly contributing as more travellers discover the charms of this region.
The city provides a break from the charming chaos of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The Sankae River crosses Battambang’s centre creating a picturesque cityscape along the riverside where a number of restaurants and bars delight visitors with Khmer and international cuisine as well as ice cold beer and evening cocktails.
The city of Battambang has a reputation of producing many artists, including actors, singers and circus performers (the magnificent Phare Ponleu Selpak is based here). With over 100 ancient Thai, French and Khmer colonial buildings, pagodas and temples Battambang has been named by UNESCO as a City of Performing Arts.
