Best time to visit Myanmar

Myanmar has a tropical monsoon climate.  A dry-cool season runs from November to February before the temperatures rise during the hot season (March to May).

From June to October the monsoon brings high rainfall, particularly in Yangon, the Irrawaddy Delta and the Bay of Bengal coast. October and December are the coolest months and they mark the end of the rains.

Temperatures in Myanmar are affected by altitudes. North, central and eastern regions have higher elevations than west and southern regions.

January

Temperatures remain relatively low during January in the Golden Land (ave. 24°C). Good conditions are expected across the country with lots of sun and chilled mornings and evening.

Across the country the chances of rain are unlikely and the temperatures start increasing towards the end of the month. However in the northern and eastern regions where the elevations are higher temperatures will remain considerably cold.

February

Conditions continue to improve in Myanmar during February. No rain expected, sunny days and moderate temperatures across the country. Chilled mornings, warms days and excellent travelling conditions.

Visitor numbers increase as February and March are considered some of the best months to travel in Myanmar. The temperatures in the northern mountains are likely to hover around 26°C during the day while the plains, the west coast and Southern Myanmar are expecting average temperatures of 31°C.

March

March is considered peak season in Myanmar. Moderate temperatures across the country (ave. 32°C) , little or no rain expected, sunny days and blue skies. During march visitor numbers increase, it is recommended to secure accommodation and book activities early.

Conditions in the west coast are excellent for trips to the beach. Lots of sun and dry conditions are expected throughout the region including southern areas like Yangon and Ngapali.

The northern mountains are now warming up with temperatures averaging 31°C. However chilled nights and early mornings are likely to break the heat.

April

Temperatures continue to rise during April in Myanmar with the hottest months of the year just around the corner. Little or no rain is expected, guaranteeing great travelling conditions across the country. Visitor numbers are likely to be high as the last ‘dry and cool’ months are coming to an end.

Dry and hot days are expected in the southern beaches with temperatures averaging the 35°C and rising up to 40°C in the central plains, Mandalay and Bagan.

May

Temperatures across the country remain high. Probably the hottest month of the year in Myanmar, it brings temperatures of up to 40°C in the lowlands and central Myanmar. Tourist numbers start declining and humidity levels increase as we move towards the end of the month.

Conditions are still suitable to travel throughout the country although the temperatures can increase a lot during the day. Occasional showers and winds are likely to arrive towards the end of the month helping break the heat and humidity. The central lowlands and beaches in the south remain dry and hot with the rainy season just about to arrive.

June

In June the high temperatures slightly drop with the arrival of the ‘wet season’. Occasional showers break the heat and humidity bringing pleasant temperatures for most travellers.

The lowlands in central Myanmar remain relatively dry and hot with temperatures averaging the low 30’s°C. Meanwhile the beaches in the south and west coast are getting ready for the less favourable conditions that are about to arrive in the following months.

July

July brings the peak of the rainfall in Myanmar. Showers are expected throughout the country and temperatures remain high, however the rain helps cooling everything down and breaking the humidity.

The south continues to see rainfalls and the beaches in central Myanmar close due to the difficult travelling conditions. In the central lowlands temperatures remain high (low 30’s°C) and the region experience dryer climate than in the rest of the country.

August

During August you can expect rainfalls across the country that will slightly ease off towards the end of the month. However, heavy rains are expected throughout the Golden Land.

Conditions can make travelling to the west and southern regions complicated as road conditions become more difficult. Many beaches remain close while waiting for the weather conditions to improve.

September

During September rainfalls start to decrease in frequency and severity. Temperatures become more manageable averaging the high 20’s°C. However hot and wet conditions are expected throughout the country with good chances of improving during the next weeks.

Road conditions remain difficult and many beaches resorts and businesses in the west coast are closed due to the low number of travellers. The lowlands in central Myanmar remain relatively dry and hot with temperatures averaging 32°C in Mandalay and Bagan.

October

Rainfalls are easing off in Myanmar and temperatures remain relatively high (high 20’s°C). Humidity starts to decrease and many businesses in the west coast start operating again after the peak of the rainy season.

The lowlands remain relatively dry and hot with little chances of rain. In the south the conditions start looking better and beach resorts are ready to open their doors again. Traveller numbers remain low making October a good option to avoid crowds and enjoy good weather.

November

November marks the end of the wet season with rainfalls becoming much less likely, especially towards the end of the month. Temperatures remain relatively high in central and southern Myanmar (low 30’s°C) and tourist numbers continue to be low.

In the mountains cooler temperatures are expected (ave. 24°C) especially during the night. Great travelling conditions are expected across the country as the lasts showers of the year pass by.

December

December brings great weather conditions to the Golden Land. Temperatures hover around the high 20’s°C . The rainy season is now gone, leaving clear blue skies with minimal chances of rain. Humidity levels have also been dropping for the past weeks.

Conditions in the northern regions are excellent for trips to the mountains with average temperatures of 25°C and no rain expected. The southern beaches and the west coast are likely to have sunny days, moderate temperatures and great road conditions.
