Land of the Rising Dragon

Best time to visit Laos

Laos has a tropical monsoon climate and its weather system consists of a rainy season (May to October), a cool dry season (November to February) and a hot dry season (March and April).

The temperatures across the country are also affected by altitude. North, central and eastern regions of Laos are at a higher altitude than the southern areas.

During May and June temperatures remain hot and rainfalls are short. From July to august rain becomes heavier and more frequent, particularly in the south. Throughout most of the rainy season, temperatures average around 28°C in areas of lesser elevation and 23°C in the higher lands.

Temperatures in some areas in northern Laos like Huaphan, Phongsali, Namtha and Xieng Khouang can drastically drop during the night, where it can drop in some cases to the freezing point.
In Vientiane and Luang Prabang temperatures average 24 C and humidity levels remain low. The further to the south the higher the temperatures. Occasional showers are possible although they are uncommon towards the end of the month.
